Which baby gate is safe for the top of the stairs?▼

A hardware-mounted gate screwed into the wall. The AAP advises using gates firmly mounted to the home's studs. A pressure-mounted gate holds by pressing against the walls, so keep it for doorways and the bottom of the stairs. In this category, the Toddleroo and the Retract-A-Gate are hardware-mounted, the Ingenuity gate is rated for the top of the stairs only in its hardware-mount configuration, and the Regalo Easy Step is a pressure gate that is not for the top of the stairs.

Where do I need baby gates?▼

The AAP recommends safety gates at both the top and the bottom of the stairs once your child is learning to crawl and walk. Beyond that, gates are useful across doorways to rooms you cannot fully childproof, such as the kitchen.

Are accordion baby gates safe?▼

Avoid them. The AAP says accordion-style gates can trap an arm or a neck, and in 1985 the CPSC reached an agreement with six manufacturers to stop producing and distributing V-shaped accordion gates after children died from head entrapment in them. Gates sold today must meet the CPSC's gates and enclosures standard (16 CFR part 1239, which adopts ASTM F1004).

Do I really need to anchor furniture?▼

Yes. The CPSC's Anchor It! campaign says anchoring all furniture with drawers, doors and shelves to the wall prevents tip-over injuries and deaths, and the AAP advises anchoring bookcases, dressers and TV stands. Follow the anchor kit's instructions for fixing it to the wall; the Quakehold kit in this category has to be screwed into a stud, not drywall alone.

When should I start childproofing?▼

Before your baby is on the move. The AAP advises that before or as soon as your child begins crawling or walking, harmful items go out of reach and out of sight, ideally in a cabinet with a lock or safety latch.
