The only number that matters is platform height

A learning tower, which most shoppers call a toddler tower and Guidecraft calls a kitchen helper, is only as good as its platform height: the right setting puts your child at the counter now and still works a year from now.

Nobody selling these publishes that math, so we did it. Here is how a standard counter compares with a toddler standing on the floor:

  • At 18 months, the median child is about 32 inches long, so a 36-inch counter sits roughly 4 inches above the top of their head.
  • At 24 months, the median child stands about 34 inches tall, and the counter is still about 2 inches above their head.
  • At 36 months, the median child is about 37 inches tall, and the counter reaches just below the top of their head.

Heights are the 50th percentile for girls and boys from the WHO length-for-age tables CDC publishes for birth to 24 months (18 months, measured lying down) and the CDC stature-for-age tables (24 and 36 months, measured standing).

Rule of thumb: the youngest child needs the tallest platform. A tower bought at 18 months should go highest first, then come down.

The counter-fit table

A good platform puts the counter at the same share of your child's height that a 36-inch counter is for an adult, which works out to about 17.6 to 19.4 inches at 18 months and 14.7 to 16.6 inches at 36 months.

CDC's measured average adult height is 63.5 inches for women and 68.9 inches for men, so a 36-inch counter sits at about 57% and 52% of their height. The platform that recreates that range for a child is 36 inches minus 52% to 57% of the child's height.

AgeMedian height (girls / boys)Counter vs. top of head, on the floorPlatform for an adult-like counter
18 months31.8 / 32.4 inabout 4 in above17.6 to 19.4 in
24 months33.6 / 34.2 inabout 2 in above16.6 to 18.4 in
36 months37.1 / 37.5 inabout 1 in below14.7 to 16.6 in

What this table assumes, so you can redo it:

  • A 36-inch counter. It is a common U.S. kitchen height, not a rule. Measure yours.
  • A median child. Half of children are taller and half shorter. Use your child's own height if you know it.
  • Proportion, not anatomy. This is geometry, not a measured elbow or waist height. Toddlers are built differently from adults, so treat the range as a starting setting and adjust to where your child's hands land.

Do the math for your kitchen: counter height minus 0.52 to 0.57 times your child's height gives the platform range to look for.

Four towers on the numbers their makers publish

The four towers span 12.36 to 18.27 inches of platform height and 125 to 200 pounds of weight limit, and only the Lalo does not fold.

Which setting fits at 18, 24 and 36 months

Only the Little Partners Explore 'N Store and the Guidecraft Classic have a setting inside the range at every age, and Little Partners rates its tower from age 2.

A setting slightly below the range puts the counter a little higher on your child, like an adult at a tall counter. Under an inch is a small difference.

A plain wooden toddler tower with enclosed rails and a peg-adjusted platform pushed flush against a kitchen counter, with a tape measure on the countertop.

Six tower recalls in under a year

From November 2025 to July 2026, CPSC announced six recalls of children's standing towers, for collapsing platforms, tip-overs and side openings large enough to trap a child's torso.

There is no published safety standard for these products yet. ASTM has an open work item, WK86690, for a children's standing tower specification, which it says will address head entrapment, tip-over, safety bars, durability, falls and pinch points.

What the recalls point you to check:

  • The platform lock, every time you adjust it. Two of the six recalls were platforms that collapsed or loosened.
  • The size of the side openings. Four recalls named openings large enough for a child's torso.
  • Your lot number on a Guidecraft Classic or Contemporary bought used or as a hand-me-down. The recalled units were sold from June 2022 to October 2023 and the lot is on a foil sticker under the platform.

What not to rely on:

  • A weight limit. It tells you what the platform holds, not whether the tower can tip or trap.
  • A "safe" claim in a listing. With no published standard, a maker's statement is the ceiling.

The picks, by job

Best for most families from age 2: Little Partners Explore 'N Store

Four platform settings from 12.36 to 18.27 inches cover the 24- and 36-month ranges with room to spare, it folds for storage, and it holds 150 pounds. Little Partners rates it for ages 2 to 6. The recalled Little Partners tower was a different model, the Grow 'N Stow.

Best from 18 months: Lalo The Tower

Buy on Amazon · $249.00 →

Lalo rates it from 18 months, and its 17.87-inch high setting falls inside both the 18- and 24-month ranges. It has the smallest footprint here and a 200-pound limit. It does not fold, and Lalo says a child should be able to climb in and out on their own before using it.

Best for small budgets and grown-ups too: Guidecraft Kitchen Helper FLEX

Buy on Amazon · $149.95 →

The lowest price of the four, a steel frame with beech wood, a 200-pound limit and a fold. Guidecraft says it works for ages 18 months through adulthood as a step stool. Its 17- and 14-inch settings sit within an inch of every range. It is newer than the others, so it has a shorter track record.

The original folding design: Guidecraft Classic Kitchen Helper

Buy on Amazon · $199.95 →

On paper it fits all three ages: 18 inches for younger toddlers and 15 inches at three. Guidecraft rates it from 18 months and it folds flat. Read the recall section first: the recall covers units sold from June 2022 to October 2023, so a new one bought now falls outside it, but check the sticker on any used one.

Using a tower around the kitchen

The AAP notes that a chair left next to a kitchen counter lets a toddler climb to dangerous heights, and that hot liquids and foods are a burn risk during meal prep, in its safety guide for ages 1 to 2. For a tower, that means:

  • Move it away from the counter when you are not standing next to it.
  • Keep it clear of the stove and hot drinks.
  • Stay within reach. Guidecraft says adult supervision is still recommended even once a child climbs in and out alone.

For meals, our best high chairs guide covers chairs that grow into toddler seats; the baby-proofing checklist covers the rest of the kitchen.

What age is a learning tower for?

It depends on the model. Guidecraft and Lalo rate theirs from 18 months, and Little Partners rates the Explore 'N Store from age 2. Lalo adds that a child should be able to climb in and out on their own first.

What height should a toddler tower platform be?

For a 36-inch counter, roughly 17.6 to 19.4 inches at 18 months, 16.6 to 18.4 inches at 24 months and 14.7 to 16.6 inches at 36 months, based on CDC median heights. Measure your counter and your child to refine it.

Are learning towers safe?

No published safety standard covers them yet; ASTM has one in development. CPSC announced six standing-tower recalls between November 2025 and July 2026, for collapses, tip-overs and openings large enough to trap a child's torso. Check the platform lock and the side openings, and stay within reach.

Myth

Toddler towers have to meet a federal safety standard.

Fact

No published standard covers them yet. ASTM has an open work item for a children's standing tower specification, and CPSC announced six tower recalls between November 2025 and July 2026.

Myth

Once a toddler can climb in and out alone, the tower doesn't need supervision.

Fact

Lalo says a child should be able to climb in and out on their own before using its tower at all, and Guidecraft says adult supervision is still recommended once they can.
