Diaper Size Chart by Weight: Pampers vs Huggies, and When to Size Up

Choose diaper size by weight, not age. Both Pampers and Huggies say this, and both publish charts. Up to Size 1 the two charts match: Newborn fits babies up to 10 lbs and Size 1 fits 8 to 14 lbs. From Size 2 on they part ways. Pampers' Size 2 spans 10 to 22 lbs while Huggies' spans 12 to 18, so a 20-lb baby can be a Size 2 in one brand and a Size 3 in the other. Switch brands by checking the new brand's chart, not by keeping the size number.

Three things this chart shows:

• The overlaps are deliberate. Every range overlaps the next one, because babies of the same weight are shaped differently. Pampers' advice for a baby between sizes is to decide by fit.
• Pampers' ranges are much wider. That doesn't make Pampers diapers stretchier. Their chart just leaves more of the decision to fit.
• Lines within a brand can differ. Always check the weight printed on the box of the exact line you buy, especially when switching between a brand's everyday, overnight and premium lines.

When to size up

Weight tells you when a bigger size becomes possible. Fit tells you when it's needed. Pampers' rule is to move up when your baby is within the next size's weight range and the diaper feels tight, leaves red marks, or leaks even when it's on properly.

Huggies lists these signs it may be time to size up:

• The diaper no longer fits snugly below the belly button.
• You can't fit two fingers comfortably under the waistband.
• It leaves red marks on the tummy, thighs or waist.
• It doesn't fully cover your baby's bottom.
• Leaks, blowouts or diaper rash become more frequent.
• Your baby seems uncomfortable or pulls at the diaper.

Don't size up too soon, though. Pampers warns that large gaps around the legs can mean the diaper is too big even if the waist feels snug, and that sizing up too early can itself cause leaks. Its fit check: two fingers under each leg opening, with the leg cuffs pulled outward.

For newborns, Pampers says Newborn size is usually used for about the first month, and you may move to Size 1 at around 8 lbs if your baby is growing quickly. Many babies outgrow Newborn size within that first month, so buy it in small packs.

How many of each size will you use?

Both brands publish diapers per day and months in each size. Multiplying those two figures gives a rough count per size. That's our arithmetic, not the brands', and your baby will differ, but it shows where the bulk of the spending goes.

How to use these numbers:

• Treat Pampers' figures as the high end. Its per-day numbers are "up to," so its totals are ceilings. Huggies publishes averages, which run lower. Most families land somewhere between the two.
• Sizes 3 and 4 are where the volume is. Both brands put the longest stretches there, so that's where bulk boxes and subscriptions pay off.
• Newborn and Size 1 are short. Buy them a pack at a time. Unopened packs are easier to exchange if your baby grows faster than expected.

Which diaper for which stage?

Newborn to Size 1

• Pampers overnight diapers → are for the stage when your baby sleeps longer and wakes up wet. Pampers suggests an overnight diaper if leaks happen at night even in the right size.

Wipes

• WaterWipes → (99.9% water, unscented) for newborn skin.
• Pampers Aqua Pure → (99% water, fragrance-free) once you're going through wipes fast. Room-temperature wipes are fine for most babies, so see do you need a baby wipe warmer before adding one.

Potty training

• Pampers Easy Ups → are pull-on training pants. They're sized by toddler clothing size (2T-3T and up) rather than the diaper chart, so check the box.

What size diaper should a newborn wear? Newborn size fits babies up to 10 lbs in both the Pampers and Huggies charts. Pampers says you can switch at around 8 lbs if the baby is growing quickly.

My baby is between sizes. Which do I pick? Decide by fit. If the smaller size leaves red marks or leaks, move up. If the bigger size gaps at the legs, stay down.
