Cribworthy Baby Size Finder

Baby clothes size chart and infant shoe size finder

Newborn size is not the same weight at Gerber as at Carter's, and a size 3 shoe is a different length at every brand. Enter your baby's weight and length, or a foot length, and see the size in each brand's own chart.

Quick answer

Baby clothes go by weight and length, not age. Newborn size is 6–9 lb in Carter's and Burt's Bees Baby; 5–8 lb in Gerber; Primary's chart starts at 0-3 months. 0-3 months is 9–12.5 lb in Carter's and Burt's Bees Baby; 8–12 lb in Gerber; 9–12 lb in Primary. Shoes go by foot length: a 4.5 inch foot is a size 4 in Stride Rite, size 4.5 in See Kai Run, size 4C in Nike and size 5 in Carter's. Every range here is from the brand's own chart, checked 2026-10-26.

12 lb (5.4 kg) and 23 in (58 cm): 3M at Carter's, 3-6M at Gerber, 0-3M at Burt's Bees Baby, 3-6M at Primary.

How each brand runs, in its own words

Only what the brand itself states. We do not try clothes or shoes on babies, so we make no “runs small” claims of our own.

  • Gerber: When in doubt, Gerber says it may help to size up: a baby can grow into clothes, but clothes that are too small are hard to keep comfortable. Its cotton pajamas are cut snug and have their own chart. Source
  • Burt's Bees Baby: Burt's Bees Baby says to go by height and weight when you know them, that a baby may still fit 0-3 months after 3 months (or outgrow it sooner), and that a child in a higher percentile for weight or height may want the next size up. Source
  • Primary: Primary says the size chart on each product page gives a range of estimated heights and weights for each size, and that its team can suggest a size by phone from your child's height, weight and the size they wear in other brands. Source
  • Stride Rite: Stride Rite says its shoes run true to size, that a child between sizes (or with one foot bigger) should get the bigger size, and that children's feet can grow half a size every 2 to 4 months, so it suggests measuring every two months. Source
  • See Kai Run: See Kai Run says its chart already allows for growing room, and to order a size up if the foot lands between two sizes. Source
  • Nike: Nike says to measure both feet, use the longer one, and size up if you are between sizes. Source
  • Robeez: Robeez describes First Kicks as having shoe-like sizing with a snug, narrower fit. Source

Where the charts disagree

  • Newborn: 6–9 lb in Carter's and Burt's Bees Baby; 5–8 lb in Gerber.
  • 0-3 months: 9–12.5 lb in Carter's and Burt's Bees Baby; 8–12 lb in Gerber; 9–12 lb in Primary.
  • Gerber pajamas: Gerber's cotton pajama chart puts 12–16 lb in 6M, where its clothing chart calls the same weight 3-6M, and it starts at 6M. Check the sleepwear chart separately.
  • Carter's vs Burt's Bees Baby: through 24 months the two weight ranges match size for size (12.5–17 lb for 6M at Carter's, 12.5–17 lb for 3-6M at Burt's Bees Baby), but the length ranges differ slightly.
  • Shoe size 3: 10.8 cm at Stride Rite, 10.5 cm at See Kai Run, 4.13 in in Carter's Every Step but 4 in in Carter's toddler shoes, and up to 5.13 in in Robeez Soft Soles against 4.13 in in Robeez First Kicks.
  • Nike's C sizes: 1C is 3.56 in at Nike, and Nike labels sizes 1C to 7C with an age (3 to 36 months).

Not in the chart

  • Old Navy and Gap: We could not reach a readable copy of their baby clothing size charts (they load inside the shopping pages, which refused our requests), and the Old Navy baby shoe chart is a printable ruler with no lengths printed, so there were no numbers we could read and cite.
  • H&M: hm.com refuses automated requests and the archived copies of its baby size guide do not include the chart, so it is left out rather than copied from a third-party site.
  • Kyte Baby: Its sizing chart is published as an image, not text we could check line by line.

How the finder works

Clothes. Each brand's chart is matched separately on weight and on length, bounds inclusive. When the two point to different sizes, or a weight sits exactly on the line between two sizes, the finder shows both and suggests the bigger one. Combined sizes such as Gerber's 0-6M are shown as an alternative, not the main answer.

Age. Age is optional and only reads the label: a 4-month-old matches 3-6M. Labels that name a single month (Carter's 6M) are read as the three months before it, which is how Carter's own costume chart names the same ranges. Brands say to size by weight and length, so the age line never overrides them.

Shoes. The finder picks the smallest size whose listed length is at least your baby's foot, which is the “between sizes, go up” rule Stride Rite, See Kai Run and Nike each state. It works in whichever unit the brand prints and converts at 2.54 cm to the inch. The “room” figure is our subtraction (listed length minus foot), not a brand figure, and See Kai Run says its chart already includes growing room.

Measuring. Stride Rite and Nike both say to measure heel to the longest toe on both feet and use the longer foot. Gerber gives a sole length and says to measure the bottom of the foot with a soft tape. This page covers sizing only; for questions about feet or growth, ask your pediatrician.

Sleep sacks and swaddles we recommend

Wearable blankets come in sizes too, with each maker's own weight chart, so pick the size on the listing by your baby's weight. These are the picks from our sleep essentials guide.

Common questions

What size clothes does a newborn wear?

Newborn (NB) size: 6–9 lb in Carter's and Burt's Bees Baby; 5–8 lb in Gerber. Primary lists no newborn size and starts at 0-3 months (9–12 lb). Most brands also sell Preemie for smaller babies: up to 5 lb at Gerber and up to 6 lb at Carter's.

What weight is 0-3 months in baby clothes?

0-3 months is 9–12.5 lb in Carter's and Burt's Bees Baby; 8–12 lb in Gerber; 9–12 lb in Primary. At 12 lb that already puts a baby at the top of 0-3 months in some charts and into the next size in others: 3M at Carter's, 3-6M at Gerber, 0-3M at Burt's Bees Baby, 3-6M at Primary.

Should I buy baby clothes by age or weight?

By weight and length. Burt's Bees Baby says to use height and weight when you know them, and that a baby may still fit 0-3 months after three months or outgrow it sooner. When weight and length point to different sizes, this finder suggests the bigger one, in line with Gerber's advice to size up when in doubt.

How do I find my baby's shoe size?

Measure the foot from the heel to the longest toe, on both feet, and use the longer one. Stride Rite, See Kai Run and Nike all say to choose the bigger size when a foot falls between two. Enter that length in the Shoes tab to see the size in each brand.

Do baby shoe sizes match across brands?

Not exactly. Size 3 is listed at 10.8 cm by Stride Rite, 10.5 cm by See Kai Run, up to 5.13 in in Robeez Soft Soles and up to 4.13 in in Robeez First Kicks. Even Carter's own charts differ: size 3 is 4.13 in in Every Step and 4 in in its toddler shoes. Measure, then read each brand's chart.

How often should I check my baby's shoe size?

Stride Rite says children's feet can grow half a size every 2 to 4 months and suggests measuring every two months. Recheck before each new pair.
